Average speed detectors are now appearing these are designed to catch drivers who just slow down while they drive by a speed camera. They work out how fast a vehicle is going after capturing an image of its licence plate at two locations.

The cameras are being trialled in Southwark, south London, and on the A374 in Cornwall. To date, average speed cameras in the UK have been used on single stretches of main roads. A spokesman for the AA was concerned how well drivers would understand them and how well the zones would be signed.

Camera enforcement is now high profile with conspicuous cameras and signing he hoped that would continue.

Check if your Radar Detector is able to warn you about the new type of radar detector.

This blog promotes safe and responsible driving.

It is totally legal to make your numberplate invisible to Speed Cameras

When a speed camera takes a picture of your number plate, you are not allowed to tamper with the plate to make it illegible. There is however, nothing in the legislation to stop you from making your plate reflective. You can quite legally make it reflect the light from the Speed Camera Flash to give a light so bright that it obscures the number plate and leaves you free to drive on.

After extensive research, we found that the best product to do this was Photoblocker.
It is made in America to the highest possible standard. You just spray it very thinly on your number plate and although the spray is invisible to the naked eye, it bounces back a flash from a camera. The Flash used in Speed Cameras is very bright so the reflection is very bright too making your number plate invisible.

Please note that we do not condone speeding so please drive within the law

This Cobra radar detector is light weight at just 6.74 ounces With a digital display and voice alert you will always know whats going on. It has a fun feature of a compass which is kind of cool. The only issue is it has a slightly short power cord but at this price buying a longer one if you need it for a few bucks is still amazing value for money.

The Escort Radar Detector 8500 x50 claims to be “the most advanced and sophisticated detector ever!”

The 8500 can detect all radar bands currently used in North America for speed detection These include X, K and Ka bands. The unit als features detection diodes for detecting lasers. The Escort Radar Detector also has a ZR3 laser jamming system which gives powerful protection from laser detection. It also has the technology to dectect pop radar.

When a radar is detected an audio alerts warns you with a beep. The tone get louder as you get closer to a signal which gives you plenty of time to slow down The systems seems works within in about a 2 mile range which is quiet good. The X50 does give off quiet a few false X band alerts in the city but with the mute button in easy reach this minor problem is fixed really fast and easily.

Reprogrammable microprocessor can detect new radar and laser threats

Matrix display with 280 LEDs; 1-year limited warranty

The Escort Radar Detector does exactly what it says.. It detects radars and it does it extreamly well!

Ever wondered how do speed cameras work ?

There are various types of speed cameras. Most use radar, or loops which and buried in the road. Once they detect you are going over a certain speed they flash and then flash again. This is to measure how far you have moved between flashes. This then allows the speed camera to work out your speed.

Another common type snaps the motorist using a “radar gun” These are either hand-held or set up inside police vehicles. These send out radio waves that bounce of a vehicle. From the waves bouncing back to the radar detector the distance and speed can be calculated.

The minimum trigger speed is the speed limit plus 10% plus 2mph according to the London centre for transport studies.
